i think everyone has their own opinion on cussing, what is and is not considered cussing, and how offensive it is to other people. i personally do not think cuss words are any more offensive than using common substitutions for cuss words as their original meaning is still implied. i think it is a rather simple way to express your anger and frustration with another person or object that seems to be more effective than beating around the bush worrying about political correctness and hurting someones feelings. i can assure you that nobody has died as a direct result of being cussed at... and we all know that what doesn't kill us makes us stronger ;)

as far as kaneva goes... when you first log on to kaneva there is a default chat filter that is enabled so that unless you turn it off (aka you want to see the cussing) you aren't subject to any of the harsh language you do not want to be. you can sit nestled safely in front of your computer and not be affected at all by the words that could never break your bones to begin with.

note: i do think the chat filter is a good thing to have because when children log on they should not be subjected to anything their parents would not approve of and as children they do sometimes still need "protecting"

well there ya have it haha... if you read this whole thing then you likely have as much time on your hands as i do. use some of that spare time and write a response :) i like to debate

i have no prob with cussing cause lordy i have used some doozies lately
there is a few i wont use and if i hear them i will have a fit and i dont care who says them i dont like them.
its just a matter of right and wrong,there is a right way to use them and there is a wrong way to use them and if u dont know the diff then dont use them.but to ban cussing is like banning smokeing all over the place and back in the olden days when u werent allowed to drink.
so why would we want to ban cussing it will only be there behind close doors:)

While cussing may be offensive to some, it does not bother me for the most part. There r some words that I consider worse than others and I try my hardest not to use and if u use them around or toward me I will telll u about urself. U might be surprised tho to find out that these words I find particularly offensive may not be at the top of ur list. Everyones list of offensive or obscene words is different. I believe we should all try not to cuss, but we r only human and cussing should not be banned. Besides, I believe a law stating what I can and cannot say would be in violation of the first amendment of the constitution (freedom of speach).

Cussing is one man's choice wither or not they are going to do so... I for one have gotten very frustrated when you go to fast food chains and the employees behind the food prep counters cussing and not caring wither or not the customer is hearing it.... It does offend people when they are there for a calm peaceful atmosphere but are insulted with language that should be kept elsewhere... I do understand the accidental slip but when that is all they are conversing with then that is an issue..

yes but in most job markets such as fast food, nursing homes etc certain words will get you fired from your job because it is in the handbooks stating you can not us vulgar language in front of the residents or in front of possible family members coming into that business... So i am curious where the line is drawn in human society of what is acceptable and what isn't... I do agree with the freedom of speech

I've had nothing nut nice people talk to me in this game, and I've heard NO cussing. I haven't heard trolls, griefers, nor have I heard any arguments or drama.

The people of this community have been nothing but courteous, nice, helpful, and let's get right down to it.... DOWN TO PARTY.

We don't think of his stuff as being vulger, but if you study his work and the language used during the Elizabethan period, you will see that it has a lot of profanity in it.

Besides, it is not the word that hurts, it is the emphasis behind it. For example, you can threaten a dog's life with a sweet and soothing voice and it won't react, but if you scream, "I love you!" it will react negatively. (This example was taken from Penn and Teller's show.)

I totally agree with little on this one. i grew up around cussing and was told they were adult words only. i now swear and cuss like a sailor sometimes but my kids DO NOT. it goes back to the education and "being a parent" thing. its along the same lines as people who blame violence in society on video games. most people are too busy being involved with their own lives to worry about what their kids are doing and then need a scapegoat when something goes wrong. i grew up in a close knit family that pushed education and values. just because i swear doesnt mean im not mature and intelligent and a functioning memeber of society.

Our advisors and GM's are doing a wonderful job of controlling the atmosphere in the public places and keeping offensive language at a controlled status. This is greatly appreciated. But Let us all try and set the example for others (Especially the new guys coming into Kaneva)and make Kaneva an even more enjoyable place. Some of us Serve a Great and Merciful God and he cares very much for all, but he cannot be please with what is being said in this forum. I know that this post will probably start a riot, but I must stand on the truth and the truth is the Word Of God. God Bless you all and I will keep all my dear friends in prayer.:)

Just because you are a Christian which I and my husband (Ravontwo) are... does Not mean we have to stay way from this game. We are here to make a difference and to have fun. Making Christian clubs and communities. And Kaneva makes it very clear in the public dance club and in the mall that cussing is not a loud.

I wasn't going to post anything on here because I didn't want to get a debate going on. But I just can't keep my mouth shut any longer.... LOL But I do agree with all who thinks that cussing should be band not just on the game but also in RL public... Because I think it is very rude and disrespectful to hear someone cussing in front of an elderly woman or young children. I'm not saying I'm perfect and that it doesn't slip out every once in awhile but out in public I make sure to hold my tongue and make sure it doesn't slip out. I hate being on the public transportation and hearing a bunch of teens and adults just cussing up a storm they don't care who is there and listening to them. It’s very immature to me and lack of vocabulary. Some people use the f word as much as the word and. Every other word is a cuss word. I don't like saying those and I don't like hearing it. So I'm very thankful that Kaneva In the Public areas are strict when it comes to that. Now what you want to do in your own personal space (RL home and your 3D community) is up to you, but when you go into someone else’s community (specially a Christian community) you need to not use them at all. And to me all cuss words are the same. Wither its the cuss words that start with D, S, F, B they are all equal in my book, just like every sin is equal in God's eyes. as far as this whole debate goes...i do not have an issue with the current guidelines that are in place in kaneva against swearing. i understand why they are there and i am very careful not to break that rule. the original post however did not have anything to do with kaneva...the question was asked of america. the whole freedom of speech thing aside...i think its a ridiculous idea more to the point that our country has much larger issues to worry about.

and secondly i take offense to the whole i cant curse and be a christian thing. i guess just because a curse word or two fly every now and then it doesnt matter that ive been baptized, been confirmed, taught multiple years of bible school, been a member of my church's choir, attend services with family and pray to god every day. wish i would have read the fine print on my "congratulations you are now a christian" certificate.

The level of maturity on this game surprises me. To elaborate on the question "If we are such Christians why are we on this game?" I think my wife put it quite well. Just because we are Christian doesn't consititue not having fun. But Just like the mall has rules that you don't like YOU have to follow them no matter how much you complain or gripe and whine. It is not my goal nor is it the others who oppose what you people are defending, to BANN cursing, we just come with the expectation that people who use or play this game would act mature enough to make this place plesant. Unfortunately, this is reality and there will be some who just have to behave badly.
If she would take the time to read her own post she would see that we are, in fact, primarily defending and speaking on our own communities. What you do in your own community, is your own business, but when that behavior is brought into my communities or other Christian establishments, it will be dealt with swiftly. (Even those little words that fly out every now and then) ksukra. You could try using restaint thats what being a Christian is all about.:) So with that in mind please refrain from using your untamed tounge in Christian Facilities. :D

1st of all I say I'm a Christian because I am living my life Christ like, and I try to act, talk, and model the way Christ lived his life. With that being said, I have used some of those words in the past and I'm sure some will slip out every once in awhile and yes I have had bad thoughts, I'm not perfect, NO ONE is perfect except Him! I'm not judging anyone because that is not my place to judge... There is only ONE true judge and He knows each and everyone of our hearts and that is what He judges by.

But I don't want to get into a debate about religion and who will go to hell or not. I was just saying my opinion on this topic. Yeah cussing probably will never be ban in America because so many people use those words its the norm... just like smoking...drinking.... and whatever else.... But I do want to point one more thing out. For those who think words don't kill or hurt anyone You are wrong. And think again. Words are very creative therefore create LIFE or TAKE LIFE. Look at this way a kid being told they are stupid, fat, no good, and the cuss words you can think about... do you think that child has a good spirit about themselves? NO! You may think that it doesn't hurt you and maybe it doesn't right away, but it is still with you. Its deep down inside your heart and your spirit.... and it will stay there until YOU break that negative word that has been spoken in your life. Have you ever wonder why, when someone has told you that you will fail and sometime in your life you have? Or you failed at a few things over and over and over again? Well... most likely its because someone (you or some else) said that you will fail and deep down inside you held on to that. Words, No matter how small or how big can either build someone/yourself up or they can tear them down. You have control over your tongue and what come out, so it’s up to you how to use it and what comes out of it. But for me I'm going to choose to let uplifting words and positive words flow out of my mouth.

I apologize if I've offended you in anyway or if my husband has. That is not our intention to offend anyone or to judge them. What I did say is that in the Word of God it does say to not let any ungodly talk come out of your mouth (not in those exact words), So I said if you're unsure about the things that come out of your mouth since you are a Christian then you should look it up in the Word. I think the whole idea of bad words and good words, swear words etc. is a bit ridiculous. First of all words were created and defined by people, that includes every language. Our ancestors decided certain words like f***, were bad. Why? I don't know they just did. Supposedly saying these words is bad. Does this sound foolish yet? We actually take offense and are angry about words. Words only mean what we allow them to mean. Also meaning is derived from how a word is said. I can say, "Hey that f***ing guy over there, is the one I saw the other day." That's not really offensive i'm just adding flavor to the sentence. However if I say, "Go f*** yourself you dumb bi***!" That is offensive if I am trying to insult you. The words themselves are not evil or offensive, it is how they are used. Jesus will still love you if say f***. Well since this whole cussing debate got brought in to kaneva, they do offer chat filters, reason being, so that way you don't have to read the words, and seems to me more people are of the freedom of speech act that not! sorry folks looks like you get to learn to over look some of our inperfections.

i think it mosty matters what context the cussing is being used... cussing at someone....how typical... lets grow up a little bit... being kind to one another, treating / talking to others as we would like to be treated / spoken to!...

I find this post hilarious...I don't care if everyone in the world swears or not, personally I don't, I don't see the need for it, I like to find better words to express myself. besides after you used the same words over and over for everything and nothing they lose their power. My first language is Spanish and NO I dont swear in that language either, so english swearing is just funny words to me, they have no meaning and the user shows a lack of better vocabulary. sorry don't mean to be rude. just expressing my opinion. you know freedom of speech and all that.

I am not a Christian or religious in any way, but I do not cuss. I used to cuss at the drop of a hat than a real life situation taught me a lesson ...

I have a nephew who will be 5 in October. He is midly autistic and does not speak a word. He grunts, screams, sighs, whines, yelps but no words just sounds. He can convey messages like I want a drink, food, go to the toilet, I'm finished or I've had enough through simple sign language.

So I think why cuss when someone like him can't even speak at all! Cussing is abusing language and the gift of speech. This is MY stance - I will not cuss and abuse language or the gift of speech. It's just not right. :)

I am a Christian and I do not like to hear cussing BUT I also beleive in our costitution and our right to free speech. If gov and law officials interfere with this right, it wont be long until it bleeds over onto something else. I have no problem if it is a rule like in school, or even here in the WOK. I do cuss, when I am very upset usually. I don't think it makes me a bad person.

my RL hub is in the military, every other word out of his mouth is the Fbomb. I hate that.(I am NOT saying that EVERYONE in the military CUSSES)

btw I have two autistic sons as well that have no speech. So I do understand. When a wordy-durd slips from my mouth is generally out of venting or frustration and its never around my sons. I need some type of release and that is it. It took me many years to accept that they will never have speech, never be able to talk to me or tell me whats wrong, if their head hurts, if they love me. I have been thru it. They have other ways of expressing themselves and they are happy teenagers considering all the stuff they have to go thru.

being a christian has nothing to do with cussing. many christians cuss, drink, cheat on spouses and what have you. this is not a religious issue. its an issue of free speech and expression. i choose to express myself with a few choice words, frequently. it doesnt make me a bad person. i am educated as well. i know there are other words to use. but to say oh darn when i just fell down the stairs and sprained my ankle just doesnt work for me. it doesnt work when i step in some christians dogs poop either, cause some christian let their dog poop in the grass behind my house and didnt clean it up. :mad: this thread is starting to annoy me.

I'm no Saint and I can honestly say that I have quiet the potty mouth at times but I do censor myself especially so around those that do not cuss,children and old folks. But come on people let's be honest everyone says a cuss word every now and then even those that says they don't.. DO. :eek:

i think that this code of conduct is quite reasonable and adequate, however there are a few grey areas as to what constitutes a cuss and its level of offensiveness, for example different regions/countries have everyday non-offensive words with meanings that can be construed as disturbing in other parts of the world.
