View Full Version : User Interface Feedback

While I know most people aren't as excited about user interfaces (UI) as I am, I am curious if you all have any feedback on the new look of the UI. Granted, we didn't change much of the functionality (although we did add a few things such as sorting by raves, adding the "go home" button to the travel menu, etc.) the graphical update to the UI was pretty significant and I'd really like to hear your feedback. User Interface is kind of one of my hot buttons, so its near and dear to my heart. :)
Also, I'm in the process of working on the next phase of UI updates. We've got a ton of stuff I'd like to add to the UI to make it easier to use, more options, etc. but I'd like to hear what you all would like to see added to the UI as well.
Some examples of stuff we are talking about adding (none of these are guaranteed, just ideas for now):
-Pattern Stamp: ability to add the most recently selected pattern to objects without having to open the pattern browser every time.
-Travel Filters: makes using the "Go Places" and "Meet People" options easier.
-Welcome Menu: hints and tips for when you first log in, very helpful for newer players.
-Multi-select: allows you to select multiple objects. Makes moving lots of objects much faster. This one is a bit tough, but we really want to do it...that is if you all think its useful of course.
So what else would you like to be able to do? Thanks in advance for the feedback and ideas folks!

I have to say I think all of these are great ideas. I'd like to see all these for sure. Another one which I'm not sure if it's related to this or not. But, just in case I'll put it here.
The ability to rotate an object on all axis. This would be of a great help. And, maybe shorten the buy materials catalog some. If were were also given the ability to resize building items that would help too. Maybe max the size to what it currently is. With the Minimum to what the current is as well. This would really make it a lot better for creativity.
Hope this helps and if I happen to think of others I'll post them as well.

The recent pattern thing would be AWESOME, lol. I hate having to repeatedly go to page 17 out of 30 uuurrrgh. But yeah, the new interfaces seem too big to me. Also, I've noticed that every time I pull up my inventory, it takes forever to do anything in it. Have you heard about this at all? It takes long to load, then long to select, yada yada. It's going to make building a PAIN, lol. I love those ideas, though. It's already been suggested to have a list of fave hangouts and homes so I won't repeat that... or will I...?:D

as far as the "go home" button i think it was a waste of your time since it was easier to access where it was previously located. i know that button is still where it was but rather pointless to add another. ok now picture frames, i think they should be more like the vertical panels to where you can place them anywhere. i have 4 floors to my house and can only put picture frames up in one of the floors:( ok now a lot of people have massive friends list, could it be taken into consideration to be able to mark our favorite friends to make it easier to find them instead of going through page after page to find who it is without having to type their name. i know most of my friends names but some have numbers added into their name and i dont always remember all the numbers so that makes it hard to search for them buy typing it into search. like i posted elsewhere id also like to be able to do more with our objects, meaning taking a vertical panel and making it diagonal or horizontal. some here have built cars (none as good as what arondale has:P) but if we could rotate things more and use the cylinders it would make for a better wheel than a square block lol. many have mentioned before also the use of GIF's which would help make things like the water in our pools and tubs look more realistic not to mention the patterns people could use. well thats all for right now, im sure ill be back again lol

Oh yea, forgot to mention the favorite hangout/home list. That's on the list too, but I don't know if it will make it in this next phase. Definitely something that we want to do eventually though.

I think that should go back to transparent and did you ever think of a side panel? where you mosue over it, it pops out to use and when you move your mouse away it goes back in hiding? a nice tool vista has :) same with the chat box so its not always there in your way.

the chat box isnt in the way if you actually want to see what someone is saying when they say it. you can minimize it though:)
on a personal note, if you have vista i hope the security issue it had is fixed on your computer:)

I would also like to have the ability to save favorite places...and maybe stretch that desire to include my own notes (not too important, but a nice feature for places/people I've visited, since there are some people I would like to remind myself of good or bad attributes)
Another feature I would like to have is the abilitly to select more than one panel/object at the same time (in my place). Say I build a stairway or complicated divider wall and want to move the 'parts' together while maintaining their 'group' orientation. (+ select)

papac -
The feature you are describing is what i called "multi-select" so yes, it's on the list although bit complicated. We definitely see the value in adding it though so if not this next phase, hopefully in a future phase. :)

Only skimmed through the other posts so hope I'm not repeating anything someone else has already said.
I'd like the ability to use a custom UI or at least a choice for different colors/styles, I'm not a fan of microsoft, and the new UI screams microsoft, looks like ui's they have done specially the color pattern.
I also agree with the others that it seems too big, other one seemed a little smaller and also seemed faster.

the multi-select and move is a must :) oh that would make things so much easier.
360 rotate for objects along ALL axis points
trim the popup menus, especially the emote/action panel window - its wider now, takes up more realestate.
(related: most times you have to use an emote on first tab (default) before yu can switch to dance or gesture tabs)
the patternstamp(use last pattern button) would be a godsend too like the multi-select for move.

Is there any way to make the emote box semi-transparent like the chat? Or make it go semi-trasparent when you're not clicked on it? I leave my emote box up when I'm dancing because I sometimes type the wrong thing and stop dancing, lol. Takes too long to pull it back up each time, and it does get in the way.

NB: you do know that there are keyboard commands for the dance moves so you don't have to pull up the non-transparent menu? Don't you? ;)

they dont always work slash lol, they have their moments. besides the point is that the lil emotes screen is too big.

Slash, can you tell me what the shortcut is for the ladies' sexy dance? All the shortcuts are listed as dance 1, 2, 3, etc and I'm not going through them all. This is a discussion on the user interface and I'm talking about that. *bleh* LMAO. *hugs*

In yet another futile attempt to score some points against the all-knowing NB, and working from memory, I stated that there are keyboard equivalents for the dance moves. They are listed but [from my subsequent research] they don't appear to work. I therefore retract the comment, including the feigned insult to NB's omniscience in all matters WoK. We are truly unworthy....:D :p ;)
But IF they worked.... IMHO keyboard equivalents that work are a better solution for reducing screen clutter than onscreen menu redesign.... I for one use a remapped key to switch camera views, and that works well for me.

I apologize :( if anyone interpreted my prior remarks as anything resembling a personal attack on NB. It was [by all appearances] a weak attempt at humor. I had hoped by liberally sprinkling the post with smilies that that would be clear. I don't deal in and have no interest in personal attacks of any sort. I'll try to be more straightforward in the future.

I didn't think that at all. That's why I threw in the hug. :p I seriously did check out the shortcuts before and found most didn't work or only worked sporadically.

anyhowz keyboard shortcuts ARE user interface topics :D :p its you know..a user...who is...interfacing...with the program.
which brings up a good point...make 'em work!! give us more!!:D

I could see your frustration with it being "big"..but yet, with it being as big as it is, it has a lot of hefty features that come with it. I do agree that there should be a "minimal" or custom, but yet, that would take away from our experience. So, you win some, you lose some. Anyways, thats my 2 cents on that, have a nice day!

most of those "hefty" features we dont want or need. we do need some more but not as many as ive heard were going to get. however if we are going to have as many different dances as ive hear they should allow us to delete the ones that we dont like so we dont have to filter through them. being able t do that and change sizes of things would be a big help to each user.
